Taller con las chicas de Craft and the City

Hace un par de días las chicas de Craft and the City organizaron un fin de semana lleno de sorpresas en Valencia, donde realizaron multitud de actividades y talleres con diferentes crafters de la ciudad y visitaron algunos de los lugares más atractivos de la urbe.

Con una gestión impecable, mucha simpatía y profesionalidad, tuvieron la amabilidad de invitarnos a participar montando un taller. Así que nos vimos el domingo por la mañana en el río (cauce antiguo del río Túria, actualmente transformado en jardín de uso público) y propusimos a las participantes decorar una pareja de pajaritos de madera serrados a mano, para colgarlos como decoración en las paredes de sus casas.

La verdad es que estábamos un poco nerviosos, queríamos que todo saliera bien... ¡y así fue! fueron dos horas divertidas y relajadas donde hablamos con las chicas, dimos consejos y nos maravillamos con los resultados.

¡Esperamos que en las siguientes ediciones les vaya tan bien como en ésta!

A couple of days ago the girls from the Craft and the City organized a weekend in Valencia dedicated to visiting the most attractive parts of the city and to workshops with diferent crafters.

They were very kind to invite us to organize a small workshop. We proposed  to paint and decorate a pair of wooden birdies for hanging on their walls at home.

Their organization and professionalism was impressive. Of course they were also very nice to us. So, last Sunday morning went to the old river (the original course of the River Turia, now transformed into a garden for public use) and we decorated our birds. 

The truth is that we were a little nervous at the beginning, we wanted everything to go well... And it did! It was lots of fun in a relaxed mood, talking to the girls, giving advice and, finally, evaluate the results.

Thank you very much to "the two Deborahs" for their kindness and professionalism, we hope that the next editions of Craft and the City go as well as this one.

In this blog we found a wonderful collection of Japanese commercials made ​​during the 1920-1940 decades. I've uploaded some of the pictures for you all.

La decadencia elegante de la hora azul

Son tiempos intermedios. El otoño es una estación de transición, un poco caótica y desordenada, donde el verano se aleja sin decir adiós y las rutinas se instauran poco a poco en nuestro día a día. Lentamente el aire se va haciendo menos amable, aparecen las chaquetas de manga larga, las tazas de té caliente y los gatos acurrucados sobre la cama. A pesar de ser un tiempo de degradación y decadencia, tiene un aire elegante que me resulta irresistible. 

Las mañanas son frías, las calles se vuelven silenciosas y crujientes y todo parece estar envuelto por un ambiente ligeramente tenso, sin llegar jamas a resultar crispante. Las cafeterías se transforman en refugios donde poder mirar la calle a través de sus cristales cada vez más fríos, y el chocolate caliente y las sopas nos parecen líquidos divinos. Buscamos en el fondo del cajón esos calcetines peludos y el granate nos parece el color más chic. Las hojas caídas pasan a formar parte del decorado habitual y coger la bici comienza a ser un pequeño reto. El baño se llena de vapor al abrir el agua caliente y no podemos evitar poner discos de Billy Holiday a media tarde. Aparece la glicerina en los labios y los abrazos nocturnos bajo el edredón.

Sin embargo, lo mejor de esta época nostálgica es el atardecer. Las horas de sol se van acortando poco a poco pero las farolas se encienden demasiado tarde. Gracias a la coincidencia de estos factores aparece un fenómeno que yo denomino la hora azul. Ese momento justo antes del anochecer, cuando la luz natural es escasa y las farolas permanecen apagadas. Unos minutos donde todo se vuelve azul. Se crea una sensación de irrealidad absolutamente deliciosa, donde los edificios, las personas y el ambiente se tornan monocromos. 

¿Alguien lo ha notado alguna vez? en esta época del año es mi momento del día favorito. Lo que lo hace especial es su brevedad, ya que al encenderse las farolas desaparece como por arte de magia. Creo que reúne todas las características del otoño: ligero desasosiego, nostalgia romántica, brevedad y decadencia.

Hi everybody!

Autumn is an in-between time. A season of transition. A bit chaotic and disordered. It is when summer goes away without saying goodbye and the daily routines slowly settle. Gradually, the air becomes less friendly, along come the long-sleeved jackets, hot cups of tea and the cats snuggle up on the bed. Despite being a decadence and degradation time it hides an elegant look that I find irresistible.

The mornings are cold and the quiet streets become crispy and wrapped in a slightly tense mood, though never violent. The coffee shops harbour you and you can watch the streets through the colder and colder window glasses. Hot chocolate and soups are craved for as if they were divine liquids. 

We look for those furry socks at the bottom of the drawer and garnet seems the most chic color. The fallen leaves become part of the scenery and riding the bike becomes a bit of a challenge. The bathroom vanishes in steam when we open the hot water and it is impossible not to listen to Billy Holiday records in the afternoon. Glycerin kisses our lips and the night hugs come back.

However, the best of this nostalgic season is the nightfall. The daylight hours become shorter and the streetlights turn on too late. With this coincidence, there is a phenomenon which I call the blue hour. That moment just before dusk, when natural light is scarce and the streetlights are still turned off. A few minutes where everything turns blue. It creates a sense of unreal which is absolutely delicious. Buildings, people and the environment become monochrome.

Has anyone ever noticed the blue hour? At this time of the year, it is my favourite part of the day. What makes it special is its brevity, as the streetlights turn on, it disappears as if by magic. This hour conserves all the characteristics of autumn: slight uneasiness, romantic nostalgia, brevity and decay.

Coca de yogur

Cuando hice el post de Handmade lemonade os comenté que pondría una receta de coca. Aquí está.

A modo de aclaración, en la zona de Valencia se llama "coca" al bizcocho, es decir, a la receta base desde la cual puedes elaborar postres o pasteles más complejos. Sin embargo aquí es un producto en si mismo, siendo la más conocida la tradicional Coca de Llanda (algo así como "bizcocho de lata" en referencia a los moldes de hojalata en los que antiguamente se horneaba la masa). 

Esta receta la he escogido porque es rápida de hacer, necesita pocos ingredientes y da como resultado un bizcocho delicioso para desayunar, nada que ver con la bollería industrial del super.

 

When I made the Handmade lemonade post I said I'd would upload a recipe of "coca". So, here it is!
 
To clarify things, in the area of Valencia we call "coca" a basic cake, ie the basic recipe from which you can develop more complex desserts or pastries. However here it is taken as a product itself, being the most famous one the traditional Coca de Llanda (something like "biscuit tin" in reference to the tin molds in which formerly they were baked).

I chose this recipe because it is quick to make, requires few ingredients and results in a delicious cake for breakfast, completely different from the super industrial bakery.

INGREDIENTES:

1 yogur

1 aceite (preferentemente de girasol, es más ligero)

2 azucar (yo uso moreno)

3 harina

1/2 sobre de levadura

2 huevos

 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 yogurt 

1 oil (sunflower preferably is lighter) 

2 sugar (I use brown) 

3 flour 

1/2 packet of yeast 

2 eggs

ELABORACIÓN:

1.- El recipiente de medida es el envase del yogur, se vacía en un bol y se rellena con 1 medida de aceite, 2 de azucar y 3 de harina. Se añade el medio sobre de levadura y los huevos.

2.- Se mezcla con las varillas de la batidora hasta que queda una masa homogénea.

3.- Se traspasa a un recipiente apto para horno.

4.- Se le añade si se quiere algún ingrediente extra (nueces, pasas, galleta...) En este caso lleva trocitos de chocolate negro.

5.- Se hornea 30 minutos aproximadamente a una temperatura entre 180 y 200º C  

6.- Se desmolda al enfriar y... ¡a comer!

 

 

 

 

PREPARATION: 

1. - The measurements are done with the yogurt container. In a bowl we put 1 yogurt, 1 part oil, 2 of sugar and 3 flour. Add the half packet of yeast and the 2 eggs. 

2. - Mix it with the blender until it becomes a smooth dough. 

3. - Put the dough in an appropriate container for the oven. 

4. - You can add, if you want, some extra ingredient (nuts, raisins, cookie ...) In this case, black chocolate chips. 

5. - Bake for approx. 30 minutes at 180-200 ° C. 

6. - Take it out and let it cool down ... It's ready!
