No conviene resistirse, sino entregarse.

It's been a while since I write in mandarinux. During these last weeks we've been here and there like crazy: markets, trips, meetings, dinners, visits ... It has been an interesting and challenging month. But as the saying goes "the calm comes after the storm". All my life I have seen how this saying was true: after periods of daze, or social and emotional learning always come periods of calm in which nothing really happens.

Do not consider myself a particularly sociable person. I like to spend time alone and I do not consider it boring. Normally I maintain an internal dialogue, a conversation with myself that makes me feel very calm. It may seem a strange thing to say, but I pay a lot of attention to the moods and thoughts I feel throughout the day. It is precisely during the periods of calm when I pay more attention to myself, when I most discover about my joys and anxieties.

During my childhood and youth I considered these dialogues as natural and intrinsic to myself. For some time now, I have been trying to pay more active attention to kind of thoughts and emotions that are generated when I spend long times without external stimulation (such as obligations and social events) and do the things I like, such as walking or reading. Interestingly, the more I focus on them, the more a specific desire unveils: the need for balance. I do not consider myself a particularly spiritual person, but I believe that there are connections beyond the conscious perception. Intuitions and internal capabilities that are atrophied, either by the modern way of life or by the society in which we develop. They all manifest when we have our guard down. Usually, to accept and listen to them is the right thing to do.

In my case, most of the times I feel the need to connect body and mind. I have clear needs like the desire to make some exercise, to go outdoors. A contemplative attitude arises. It is not a passive attitude, but rather an open-minded and attentive listening. A simple urge to BE. And the tool that best helps me to achieve it is meditation. Unfortunately for us, we have grown in the middle of constant stimulation. Our minds operate autonomously, generating waterfalls of thoughts, even without our approval. I call it the "crazy monkey" to this restless activity of our brain. Interestingly, when we sit in meditation, trying to control our breathing and being somhow in tune, there is an avalanche of thoughts, emotions, judgments, pictures, the respiration generally accelerates and we feel we lose control of the situation. Our brain is in a state of alarm because we ask it to stop and it simply doesn't know how. So it generates an overreaction. We simply have a bad time living the present moment.

Personally, just to try it out has been one of the best decisions I've made. Of course, I still have difficulty, but once I let go, surrender completely and simply trust, something wonderful happens: the amount of thoughts gradually diminish, breathing becomes naturally balanced. For some moments I AM, I am a conscious, without judgments or emotions. The present moment is presented to me and I observe it. It may sound mystical, but it is not a religious emotion: it is a different state of consciousness. While I am awake I surrender to the moment, I live fully, I can be myself completely.

To quiet the mind and heart for a few minutes a day is helping me to get to know me better. I'm more focused and I can clearly convey my needs and my joys, my concentration is increasing and my anxiety decreasing. I can better understand my thoughts and emotions, and specially my cyclical residual unresolved conflicts. I see my contradictions and what I have not covered yet. I can better appreciate the details, the small pleasures, I am more aware of the passage of time.

For those who are curious, I can tell you what my teacher told me in the first day of meditation. Meditation is not just sitting, it takes two elements: INTENTION AND TRUST (DELIVERY). The intention is understood as will, attitude and desire to perform meditation (if you sit and close your eyes but inside you're thinking about other things, obviously it won't work). Trust refers to eliminate prejudices and fears, fears or internal barriers that prevent us from trying. Pay attention to thoughts like "I can not do it, I keep thinking, I can not control it, I'm doing it wrong, this is bullshit ..." try not to make value judgments and accept the fears that arise in a new situation like this.
We surrender to sleep every night, trusting that the next day we awake. We do not make judgments or question the act of going to sleep. If we had the fear of not waking up, we would stay each night in distress, we would not sleep so quietly. To delivery oneself to meditation is similar, it requieres confidence in the process.
The union of these tools, the intention and trust, are the initial requirements to meditate. From there, each must go alone.

In conclusion, I copied a text that I very much like and I think it matches quite well the things I have discovered about meditaton:

"Like many of my contemporaries, I was convinced that the more experiences I had and the more intense and dazzling they were, the sooner I waould to become a fulfilled person. Today I know that rather than having many experiences, whatever knd they are, we should limit ourselves to living: let life be expressed as it is, and not fill it with the artifices of our travellings and readings, relationships and passions, shows, entertainment, searches ... All our experiences often compete and succeed in life almost always obscure it, sometimes cancel it. True life is behind what we call life.

Meditation increases trust. One sits and what do you do? Trust. Meditation is a practice of waiting. But what do we really expect? Nothing and everything at the same time. If you are expecting something specific, that wait is worthless.
For this reason, you can meditate no matter if you feel good or bad, happy or sad, hopeful or disappointed. Any mood you have will be the best mood at that time for meditation, precisely because it is the one you have. Through meditation you learn not to want to go anywhere other than being, you learn how to want to be where you are, fully. To explore it. To see what it gives back to you.

Meditation allows glimpses of reality. They are fleeting but true it can give you times when you capture who you really are and why you are in this world. To achieve these glimpses one must not make an effort. Because rather than helping, the effort tends to hinder them. One should not resist, but surrender. Both art and meditation are always born from delivery, not the effort. And so it is with love. The only thing necessary for such delivery is to be there, to capture what you see. Meditation is something like a rigorous training delivery".

Denia

Últimamente no paramos.

Lately we do not stop. We travel along with our creations from one part of spain to another, assembling and disassembling the our mandarinux stand again and again. And we hope we can do it for a long time. Because this job brought us this weekend to a very special place. It was the first edition of Cambiamelomarket and we were invited along with other designers. This craft market was held inside an old house in the historic centre of Denia. There were clothing swaps, homemade snacks and incredible craft items.

Thanks for inviting us to such a bold event.
